Introduction: Reid Hallam

Hello everyone. I’m Reid and I’m writing this to let you all know a little about me.

I was born in Reno but stayed there only a few years until moving to the bay area in
California. My parents believed they could acquire more lucrative jobs in California’s
economy. I went to school there all the way up to my junior year of high school. After
my junior year, my father retired and decided to move our family back to Nevada. I
finished high school in Sparks. Upon completing high school, my family and I moved
to Carson City where my parents intended on settling down.

At this point, I got my first job at a nearby Save Mart store where I, disappointingly,
worked for almost half a year. I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to
quit working there. I did, though, aspire to go to university but didn’t have the means to pay for it. It seemed to me the most effective and expedient way to solve these problems was to join the Army National Guard.

I joined the Nevada National Guard in April last year and my training lasted about 5
months. The job I trained for was a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear
Specialist. It sounds really smart and all but the whole job is really just cleaning gas
masks and teaching people how to put on hazmat suits and what not. I thought I was
going to be like a scientist in a lab coat or something cool like that but I was disappointed
to find out the job is really boring. However, the whole reason I joined the Guard was to
find a way to pay for university so it worked out in the end.

Now I’m a freshman at the University of Nevada, Reno. I’m planning to major in
Mathematics with a specialization in Statistics. I took Math 126 during the winter semester
because I thought I could jump into Math 127 for this semester but my completion of
Math 126 didn’t process fast enough so I’m pretty salty about that. I also aspire to get a
graduate degree in philosophy but, at the the same time, it seems unrealistic. Philosophy
is a main area of study for me and it’s something I enjoy learning about in my free time.

Another hobby of mine is playing the piano. I try but I am not very good it. I also like to
play Texas Hold ‘em poker. My math degree might actually come in handy with that. Hiking
is one of my favorite things to do as well. Carson City has a few good trails but they can
get rather repetitive. I went to Yosemite a few months ago and that was a really nice place
to go on hikes. When I’m not doing anything though, I usually just hop on YouTube or
watch Hulu or something like that.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to this semester with everyone. #gunby101
