Fate Jacobson - Blog Post 1

My name’s Fate and I’m a 19-year-old freshman majoring in Computer Science. I’ve
lived in Las Vegas for most of my life but for a short period of time (around fifth to sixth grade) I
lived La Jolla, which is an incredible area in San Diego, California. I’ve never gotten over how
awesome it is there and I desperately want to move back before I’m in my 50’s so I can enjoy it
to the fullest. My family and I lived about a block away from the ocean and I grew a deep love
for the beach. I miss surfing the most but everything about that place is amazing. I couldn’t see
myself living there anytime soon since it’s way too expensive, however, I have a gameplan.

The most essential part of that plan is what I want to do for a career. I’ve always been
interested in science and technology. I used to spend hours every day either watching youtube
videos about the universe or playing various games on the computer with my friends. I grew up
in a generation where everyone is familiar with computers but I think I became particularly
skilled and comfortable with them through all of those years of gaming. Those are some of the
best memories I have and I think that's what’s driven me to want to work in the computer
science industry. I’m not exactly sure what aspect of the field I want to specialize in, but
whichever I choose, I have to be able to work remotely (aka; work from home). That’s essential
for my plan to move back to La Jolla, and Luckily for me, there’s a large and growing demand
for that type of work.

I need to be able to work remotely because I want to leave the United States for a while.

Being able to work from my laptop would give me the freedom to live somewhere where my
expenses would be much lower. Thailand, for example, has delicious food for only a couple
bucks and luxury apartments not far from the beach for only $200 - $600. When it comes to fun,
I don’t really play video games anymore. However, most things I enjoy are typically online. One
of my favorite things to do lately is listening to a podcast. Gary Vaynerchuk, Sam Harris, and
Joe Rogan in particular cover a range of topics that I’m interested in like business, philosophy,
comedy, and science. I think the internet makes living out of the country much easier now than it
may have been 20 years ago. Things like Netflix, Youtube, podcast, and social media make it
possible to stay connected to culture no matter where we are, so why not enjoy all of that stuff
somewhere cheaper?

So that’s how I plan to move back to La Jolla. I’ll work from my computer in various
affordable countries, saving and investing the extra cash while I spend my days surfing and
watching Netflix. When I’m financially ready, I’ll come back and settle in paradise.

Oh also, I’ll need room in the budget for a Tesla, that’s very essential.

  1. Fate, I loved how you explained the love that grew on you for the ocean! I love the ocean as well, but its awesome that you lived so close to it. It's also interesting that you are interested in moving to Thailand, I have family from there! They have the best food too, Thai food is my favorite. Living there would be pretty cool I think. I have always wanted to travel there and visit family. Lastly, I agree on the Tesla as well. Very smart investment I'd say.
