An Introduction: Aedon Zier

Hello fellow lads.

My name is Aedon Zier, it’s a German way of spelling Aiden (so I've been told) and sounds the same too! I’m a student at the University of Nevada, Reno and as of right now my major is journalism. At this point in time, I’m trying to become an Education major as I would like to move into the world of teaching. Specifically teaching English to high school students and then at the university level.

I’m originally from Henderson which is on the very outskirts of Vegas. But I’m apart of Vegas nonetheless and it’s where I’ve spent the better part of my life. I only came to UNR as to get out of the city and go for a new experience (while only being an hour flight from home). I’m looking to involve myself in the UNR community, taking up various jobs and trying to be apart of clubs.

On Fridays after school, you can usually find me at the UNR Dragon Club playing DnD with other club members. It’s a fun way to kill time before the weekend but we do go very late at times, sometimes till 3 in the morning. I’m also apart of Art History Club which only meets up during certain times of the month. Next week we’re looking into Surrealism and offering open discussion. We meet on February 13th at 6:30 pm in CFA Room 18 and I’m really looking forward to it.

My personal hobbies I try to focus on during the week keep me busy in between running to the next class. I enjoy music and even try my hand at making my own. I’m currently learning to play the guitar but making small progress. I’m starting to think that I might be tone deaf. On my computer, I like to use programs like photoshop to make photo-manipulations as I don’t know how to draw. I take heavy inspiration from old westerns and 80s inspired artwork to create most of my projects. Recently I’ve been trying to read more but my books seem to be piling up more than I can actually read them. I also enjoy working out and taking care of my body the best I can.

If I could imagine a perfect plain of existence for myself it would be on a beach enjoying a hot dog. There’s something about the simplicity of a beach that makes it a wonderland for people like me. The crashing waves, the warm sand, cawing seagulls, and a smell to you to the next dimension. It’s just one of my favorite places to be. I would enjoy that place more if I had my favorite food to back me up. And I usually do! There’s something so simplistic about the hot dog with just some ketchup on it that makes it the most glorious food ever. People always tell me how disgusting that is and how hot dogs contain rat poison in it but it hasn’t seemed to stop my heart yet.

I’m looking forward to English this year as I learned a lot last year. With that, I hope to do much better to create quality work for this class. Within a year I also hope to settle down in Reno and start up a life for myself. I just got to find a steady job first.

Introduction: Tim Costa

Hello everyone! My name is Tim Costa

I am from a small-town called Escalon which is located two hours south of Sacramento California. The closest recognizable town near me is Modesto California. I am 20 years old and am currently on my first semester at University of Nevada, Reno. Prior to attending this school I spent two semesters at a small private school in Iowa. The reason for being there was because I was recruited to play a sport there. Unfortunately my heart was not with the midwest. I belong closer to home and UNR was my next college if I chose not to play a sport anymore. However I did have to attend a junior college for a semester before going here. Luckily I was able to get out in just a semester, which I am very proud of because I was getting a little to comfortable living back at home.

Some particular things I am interested in, as you can probably tell, is sports. I love finding excuses to go to sporting events (of any kind) to cheer on the local team. Other things I am interested in is spending time with friends on the weekends and watching new movies I can find online or in the theater. I am also really big on playing poker right now, so if anyone is trying to get a game in let me know! I also like to hike sometimes in the summer and enjoy nature. Lastly thing I enjoy is spending time with my family whenever I can find the chance because I am very close with them. The two biggest things I value in my life are my family and friends.

As for my academics, I am a business major while also trying to minor in communication. This was sort of the only thing that I found interest in when going to school. Also I think business is a very broad thing that I can use in a lot of different environments and opportunities. As for an English course I was actually somewhat looking forward to taking this class. I think the guidelines are really simple and on some occasions I actually do not mind writing. I also would not mind reading so much if it was some type of good novel with a interesting plot.

Relating to the main topic of this class, which is food. I was a fairly picky eating growing up. However I have now expanded my mind and tastebuds and have tried all types of food. My favorite type of food is seafood. If I would have to narrow the food down even more, I would say my favorite food is shrimp. I enjoy all types of shrimp. As Bubba Blue once said in the movie Forrest Gump "my family knows everything there is to know 'bout the shrimp bidness." I sometimes like to be mainstream and stick with coconut shrimp, but I will take any type of shrimp. Unfortunately seafood does not normally fill me up so I try to order other things mostly.

Those are few facts about me, Looking forward to reading about other people!

Introduction: Andrew Na

Supp. I'm Andrew and I'm currently a freshman at UNR majoring in Kinesiology.

I was born in Seoul, South Korea, moved to Bellevue, WA in 2005, and down here to Reno in 2012. When I first moved here from Washington, everything was new for me, and I started middle school right in the middle of the year in 7th grade, not knowing anyone, the campus, nothing. So unfortunately, I turned to eating and video games as my sense of comfort. Years passed and by freshman year of high school, I've made a group of friends, but my health was at its poorest. That's where I turned to fitness instead of video games, and since then, I've enjoyed everything about it. Not only did it help me get healthier, but it's given me a new passion, which is why I decided to major in Kinesiology. My end goal is to be a personal trainer of some sort, or anything really in the fitness industry, because at the end of the day, it comes down to what I love to do. Depsite it being as cheesy as it is, I would not like to be doing something I don't enjoy for the rest of my life.

Some things I enjoy doing in my free time are lifting, boxing, watching spongebob, hanging out with friends, and driving. I recently started getting into boxing and I've been enjoying it a lot, especially because I can let out all my stress and clear up my head if lifting doesn't do the job. Although it might seem odd, driving and crusing around with friends help calm me down and I enjoy driving in general. My "passion" for driving and cars started when I started watching the Fast and Furious movies, and really took off when I got my lisence.

I've only had two jobs before, one as a Sales and Services Associate at Les Schwab, which was a lot of just manual labor, and Cashier at The Home Depot. I'm still working part-time at Home Depot, but I worked at Les Schwab full-time during the fall semester of 2018 to make some extra money. So I'm a semester behind everyone but I plan on making up the credits over summer and winter breaks. The primary reason why I started working was for the experience, but now it's turned into money, cause who doesn't love money hello?

I love anything and everything that has to do with eating. I'll eat most things, but my favorite thing to eat is either a burger or some chicken. My top restaurants in Reno are In-n-Out, Five Guys, Cane's, Anna's Mexican Grill, and most sushi places. I've been trying to watch what I eat, because I'd like to stay in shape, but here and there, I'll eat something tasty that's not the best, because I'm not preparing for a show or competing in a sport. My biggest eating accomplishment was when I was dummy thicc, and I used to be able to eat a Triple Whopper meal, large soda large fries, and 20 chicken nuggets. But every great thing must come to an end, and I'm no longer capable of accomplishing such an amazing feat. This paragraph was so I met the 500-word count. Thanks for tuning in :)

Introduction Post: Chase Rodie

Hello everyone my name is Chase Rodie. This is my first semester here at UNR. I decided to take the Winter semester off because I am a member of the Air Force Reserves and I had a lot going on and that is why unfortunately I could not start last semester.

I am originally from Reno Nevada even though I have moved around quite a bit. I lived out in Illinois while my dad was overseas doing his time for the military. Working for the Air Force has made a positive impact on my life and they even pay for my tuition and books so why not? Growing up in Reno has been awesome. The cool thing about our area is that we live close to a lot of bigger places in California while also our city not having millions of people. Reno also is one of the fastest growing cities right now with big tech companies coming in and that brings a lot of opportunities for people here. And if you have ever lived in the Midwest like me you know that the humidity and heat there can often be unbearable I much rather prefer our high and dry climate because we can experience a full four seasons.

My hobbies include skiing, hanging out with my family, and camping. Anything outdoors I enjoy, every summer me and family go camping and go to lots of spots but Yosemite is a must see for anyone who has never been. Also I really enjoy hanging out with my family because you only get one so why not enjoy the time you have with them. Another one of my hobbies is most definitely skiing during the Winter. I have been to multiple ski resorts but Mt Rose and Heavenly definitely are my favorite. Skiing is a good way to get out of your house during a time of year that most people are in staying in their houses the most.

One of our focuses this year is food. There is no other food that is better than sushi. Depending on the place you go all you can eat sushi is a steal. You pay $20-$25 and you can eat 7 rolls. If you did not get all you can eat usually a roll on its own is $7 so with all you can eat you're paying $20 for $50 worth of food. Plus you get free appetizers and desert I see no cons unless you're somebody who is allergic to seafood. Also seafood and sushi is a good way for a lot of people to try something they have never ate before. Because of the number of different fish that are in seafood usually you will always end up eating something you have never had before and therefore experience new food that is tasty.

I look forward to working with all of you this semester because we all have different life experiences and different perspectives. In this time of our lives there is a lot of bias and people not wanting to hear from others so I am interested to hear what perspectives people have on different topics so I can learn something.

Introduction: Jasmine Ramirez

Hello everyone! My name is Jasmine Ramirez, but a lot of people just call me Jas. I’m a freshman here at the University of Nevada Reno. I’m studying to become an Elementary teacher with a minor in Spanish. I come from a really small town here in Nevada called Yerington. Where there is only one high school and one grocery store so as you can imagine how tiny is it. I am also the first in my family to get an education since my parents never passed middle school and none the less high school. So being able to graduate college will not only be my dream but my mother’s dream as well.
Some interesting facts I’d say about myself is that I love running and being active, my favorite thing to do is boxing. I am absolutely terrible at math which is tragic but I mean we all have our strengths and weakness. I have one sister who happens to be in the process of becoming a nun which is pretty cool yet weird at the same time. I am vegetarian and I love animals especially my dog, her name is Chiquita, and cows, something about them. I think that they are so cool. I had happened to be around them a lot while I grew up. My stepdad would take me as a young girl to go see them when they were still babies, since he had worked at a dairy. I instantly fell in love with them.

Out of school I love to just chill in my apartment and have just “me days” I guess you could say. Where I play loud music and take some time to paint whatever but my favorite things to paint are sunset or sunrises. Something about the natural colors in the sky and the clouds that surround them that I think are so beautiful. While painting I also take care of myself, like putting on a face mask and/or hair mask and just chill. But honestly this rarely happens because I’m a full-time student and I work full time as well so when I get time to just relax it’s a blessing in its self.

I’m also very involved in my church we do a lot of community service such as make goody bags and blankets for the homeless teenagers in the Reno area or donate whatever we can to the Eddy House. I also help set up events for the youth in my church for example we just recently went to a conference in California then after that we took the kids to Six Flags. Then this March we will be having a conference in LA. We are fundraising for that right now as we speak since me and five other adults will also be taking them to Disneyland right after so that’ll be expensive but I love going to these events and I always leave learning something new, overall great experience. Being able to help other people in any shape or form is something I really enjoy. Just that feeling you get knowing you’re making a difference is worth all the troubles.

Blog Post 1

Hello my name is Kelli Christensen and I am a Freshman majoring in Public Health.
I grew up in Bishop, California and have lived there ever since. My mom is a Registered Nurse but is head of informatics and infection prevention. My dad is head of EKG and Respiratory Therapy. My sister who is 2 years older than me is in Australia to pursue her dreams of becoming a Pediatric Nurse. I also have two fosters brothers. Joey, who lives here, is 4 years older than me. Jake, who lives in Alaska, is 6 years older than me. They started living with us when I was 10.
In the future I plan to go be Physician Assistant or work in HealthCare Administration. I grew up in Medical Field environment which made me find my dream in health care. My parents are who created my dream of working in the medical field. Since my freshman year of high school I have worked at the Health Clinic in my town where I did clerical work like answering phones, creating appointments, checking in and out patients and more. Being able to work side by side with family doctors made my vision for being in the medical field more clear.
In highschool I participated in many clubs and events. I was in Associated Student Body, Leos Club, Interact Club, Language Club, link crew and many more. I graduated with over 100 hours of community service, when I only needed 20. I also graduated with CSF high honors. I also did varsity swimming for 4 years. I was also in Club team throughout every summer since I was 8 years old. In my  Senior year I worked at a Health Clinic as a front office staff/Student Trainee. This is where my dream of becoming a Physician Assistant grew.
I was born with achondroplasia which is a type of dwarfism. I have not let this stop me in any way. I have had over 20 surgeries which includes a major back surgery, major knee surgery and a major brain surgery.
Swimming is a big part of my life. I am registered under the paralympics and have two emerging times. I also have a coach down in Yucaipa, California who helps me work around my disability in swimming. He has taught me a lot and which has made my times much better. In 2017, I swam for USA at the Dwarf World Games. There I swam in 4 events and won 3 golds and 1 Silver. Swimming is something that has always kept me going even on the roughest times.
Other than swimming and school I also like to put my focus on skiing, cooking/baking, my family and my friends. I have gained many friends over my lifetime at little people of america conferences. Although we only see each other once a year we make it a goal to always keep in touch. I also go to a special needs camp called The Painted Turtle.  I have went there for 10 years and since I am now too old for it I plan to become a counselor and give children the experience I was given.
Kind Regards,
Kelli Christensen

Introduction: Reid Hallam

Hello everyone. I’m Reid and I’m writing this to let you all know a little about me.

I was born in Reno but stayed there only a few years until moving to the bay area in
California. My parents believed they could acquire more lucrative jobs in California’s
economy. I went to school there all the way up to my junior year of high school. After
my junior year, my father retired and decided to move our family back to Nevada. I
finished high school in Sparks. Upon completing high school, my family and I moved
to Carson City where my parents intended on settling down.

At this point, I got my first job at a nearby Save Mart store where I, disappointingly,
worked for almost half a year. I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to
quit working there. I did, though, aspire to go to university but didn’t have the means to pay for it. It seemed to me the most effective and expedient way to solve these problems was to join the Army National Guard.

I joined the Nevada National Guard in April last year and my training lasted about 5
months. The job I trained for was a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear
Specialist. It sounds really smart and all but the whole job is really just cleaning gas
masks and teaching people how to put on hazmat suits and what not. I thought I was
going to be like a scientist in a lab coat or something cool like that but I was disappointed
to find out the job is really boring. However, the whole reason I joined the Guard was to
find a way to pay for university so it worked out in the end.

Now I’m a freshman at the University of Nevada, Reno. I’m planning to major in
Mathematics with a specialization in Statistics. I took Math 126 during the winter semester
because I thought I could jump into Math 127 for this semester but my completion of
Math 126 didn’t process fast enough so I’m pretty salty about that. I also aspire to get a
graduate degree in philosophy but, at the the same time, it seems unrealistic. Philosophy
is a main area of study for me and it’s something I enjoy learning about in my free time.

Another hobby of mine is playing the piano. I try but I am not very good it. I also like to
play Texas Hold ‘em poker. My math degree might actually come in handy with that. Hiking
is one of my favorite things to do as well. Carson City has a few good trails but they can
get rather repetitive. I went to Yosemite a few months ago and that was a really nice place
to go on hikes. When I’m not doing anything though, I usually just hop on YouTube or
watch Hulu or something like that.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to this semester with everyone. #gunby101

My name is Payson Coverley. I am a sophomore transfer student at UNR. I transferred from a small school in Oregon where I was playing soccer, but due to injuries I am unable to continue to play soccer, which is how I ended up at UNR.  I am double majoring in agricultural science/animal science and Ag education. I am hoping to become a large animal veterinarian technician. I currently work at a small animal vet hospital just to experience both large and small animals. So, it is clear that I love animals and love to help them. I was born and raised in Nevada. I come from a family of 5. I have two sisters, one older and the other younger making me the middle child. My older sister, Hannah, is going to school in Idaho and is onto her senior year. My little sister, Molly, is a junior in high school. My dad is the Sheriff in my town and my mom is a CPA. I grew up playing soccer and some basketball. I played soccer and basketball in high school and then played soccer in college. I worked hard to get a college scholarship for soccer and reached my goal by playing in Oregon. Soccer has always been my favorite sport over basketball. My family owns a ranch in the small town where I am from. We raise and sell cattle. Our operation is a small one with about 60 head of cattle (head meaning head count). I have two dogs named Lucky and Phoebe. I also have horses named, Soda and Ricky.  I enjoy working out and playing with my dogs. I work 5 days a week at my vet hospital as well. It has been an amazing experience working there. The reason I applied for a job at a small animal vet when I am trying to go into large animal vet sciences is because I have grown up around cows and horses and have learned a lot about them by being around them most of the time. But I felt I should also explore what goes behind working with small animals. The animals we get at the hospital are dogs and cats for the most part, but we also get a large amount of birds of prey. For example, owls and hawks. Small birds get brought in as well like, pigeons, small song birds, blue birds, parrots, etc. Lizards have been brought in as well as bunnies, ducks, and chickens. It can be hard at times working at the hospital because death comes along with the job. There are animals that are too sick to heal and the humane thing to do is put them to sleep to end their pain. For a person that loves animals it is a hard sight sometimes to see an animal that is very sick or has passed away but then you must think about keeping them alive while they are suffering is the selfish thing to do. Working where I work has taught me many things that aren’t just medically related. I hope I can help many more animals in the future.

Introduction: Bill Shin

Nice to meet you, everyone. My name is Tae Ho Shin, but I like to go by Bill. I am from Las Vegas and this is my first semester at the University of Nevada Reno. For the first semester as a freshman, I attended Purdue University but decided to transfer to UNR for my second semester. After looking at the current weather condition in the Midwest, I think I made a good decision to transfer back in-state. I am a biochemistry major and I hope to work in the medical field after I graduate.
I learned how to cook naturally as I helped my grandma and my mom cook since I was young. My favorite food that I like to cook for myself is a medium-rare New York Steak with grilled asparagus and over hard style eggs. Unlike most American foods that are high in sodium, I prefer not to put salt on most of my foods, especially on New York steaks. I think extra seasoning and sauces disrupt the natural taste in food. My most favorite food is hotpot. It’s a food where you put thin pieces of vegetables and meat in a boiling broth and eat it right away when it's cooked(usually takes 10-15 seconds). Hotpot is extraordinary, especially in winter. Finishing the extra spicy Sichuan style beef broth prepares you to walk another day in the cold, after sweating as if you were standing under the sun on a midsummer day in Las Vegas.

My hobby differs when I’m at college and at home. At home, I like to chill in my bed all day, play some video games, eat instant ramyun, and like to have a good full 12 hours of sleep. However in college, I try to sleep between 6-7 hours, hit the gym every day, eat some salad, and go to the library and work - I usually play around for an hour or two in the library watching YouTube, but the fact that I’m in the library makes me feel better - on my assignments.
My external hobby is to practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, BJJ for short. It’s a full-contact sport that most of the UFC fighters practice. Jiu-Jitsu is similar to wrestling, but you can choke and bend your opponent’s joints the other way to break them. If the opponent taps, either on the ground or yourself, you respect their decision and stop the technique(choke, armbar, etc). I trained Jiu-Jitsu since I was 14 and I am currently a blue belt. Jiu-Jitsu helped me become who I am today and I recommend people to try Jiu-Jitsu once in their lifetime. Well, I recommend it to people that don’t care about getting hurt. One of my proud moments practicing Jiu-Jitsu was helping my coach teach kids Jiu-Jitsu class. One of my embarrassing moments was when I was a white belt helping the kids class, a student came up to me and asked why I was a white belt. It was funny to me because my coach told him, “Oops, don’t ask him that,” and made the student walk back and made him do the drills of the day.

I look forward to have discussions on the blog for the rest of the semester.

Introduction: Isaac Escritor

Introduction: Isaac Escritor

Hello everyone. My name is Isaac Escritor and I’m a student at the University of Nevada, Reno. I’m currently a freshman this year.

I was born on the island of Maui of Hawaii. I lived there for about six years until I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. When I moved I was barely six years old and by the time I chose to attend the University of Nevada, Reno I had lived in Las Vegas for about twelve years. Currently, I’m pursuing my bachelors degree in kinesiology. I plan to graduate in four years, so I don’t receive too much debt from all of the money I will be spending to stay here. Anyway, my goal in life is to graduate and go to medical school to further my education, so I can finally be a physical therapist. Furthermore, I wish to open my open my own clinic or workplace for my profession.

As far as living in Reno, I love the weather, specifically the cold winter. Winter is the only time I can experience snow, which I have never seen before since I lived on island with tropical weather, as well as lived in a dry scorching hot desert for the past twelve years. I simply just needed a change of weather and scenery for once in my life.
During my pastime, I enjoy sleeping in bed because nothing beats sleeping in bed with no worries. However, when I’m not sleeping I mostly read on the internet or watch netflix and Youtube most of the time. If my face isn’t buried in my phone or laptop I go outside and take a walk around Reno to explore and become familiar with the area. Usually, when I’m walking I have my favorite drink with me, which is a frappuccino from Starbucks. Before, I would have my camera and take photos because I’m a photographer, but sadly I don’t have it with me since I won’t be using it too often due to the workload from school. Before, I would also play my instruments for fun, which was the saxophone and trumpet, but I was a better player on the saxophone than the trumpet. Also, I love to exercise, so I spend some time at the gym as much as can during the week of school depending on my schedule. When I was younger I did three sports, which were taekwondo, boxing and finally track and field. Out of the three I had performed in, I prefered boxing because it was more enjoyable, in my opinion.

If I had to choose a food that I had to eat for a week straight I would choose pasta, specifically spaghetti because its my favorite all time. I’m also willing to try anything new if it looks appealing and appetizing. However, I don’t like seafood with the exception of sushi because its more appetizing than anything else I have tried so far in my life.

I look forward to meeting all of you and I hope we have a great time in this class.
