My name is Chase Rodie and I have lived in Reno, Nevada for most of my life. I was in a military family so I have been fortunate enough to live in Illinois, Texas, and Georgia (for a short time). I grew up in Reno and went to Depoali Middle School then Damonte Ranch High School where I graduated. So I like to think that I have a good sense of all different foods because I have travelled all over the country and got to try a lot of different foods. For my interview I wanted to use my great grandfather his name is John Suderman. John is 95 and still going strong he has endured a lot and he is pretty stubborn. John was abandoned at birth so he has very little memory of his younger childhood but he was adopted by a family of Mennonites in Central California. He then moved to a small town named Reedley and started a family.
Growing up what are some foods you remember eating?
Lots of bread and potatoes.
He said this is what he mostly remembers because he grew up in the 1940s when rationing was introduced and meats, cheeses, and butter was restricted.
What is your favorite dish?
Beef Stroganoff, I remember eating a lot of that with my family.
He said at that time in his life this was quite the popular dish. It was not hard to make and you could cook a lot and save some for a different time. He said it was a regular thing for him and his family at night to be sitting at the table with their lazy susan eating this meal.
How did your growing up in Central California shape you?
It taught me to be hardworking and to always keep it going even when times get bad.
Between being abandoned at birth and losing a wife a couple years ago would really mess alot of people up. But not him he still goes to church and gets coffee at his local McDonalds with some friends.
I also grew up here in Reno, I was born and raised here. It is interesting how little of food people ate back then! There wasn't really a huge variety of other dishes to make as much as there is now. I admire how he is very positive and doesn't let anything bring him down.
ReplyDeletei grew up here too. My dad always tells me the same the same story about what he ate with his 6 sisters everytime we eat at the dinner table
