I'm not from here but I have some friends who are Reno natives so I asked them about the good eats found locally here.
Me: Any good local eats found here in Reno?
Johnny: Little Waldorf's, Archie's, Gourmelt, Rick's Pizza, JJ's
Me: How did food from Reno help shape its culture?
Johnny: Reno is not special at all
Me: How is Reno unique?
Johnny: I don't know
Me: How did it shape you?
Johnny: I don't know how to answer that
Me: So Questlove did an interview of this guy from New Orleans
Johnny: New Orleans has a culture. I live in Reno
Me: I know. Any culture Reno-related you can think of?
Johnny: Nope
Me: Then what about your school lunches. How were they?
Johnny: My school lunches slapped dude. I always had these bean burritos that would burn my mouth but I would always eat them.
Me: Anything else about school lunches you remember vividly?
Johnny: Yea, this one time I did that thing beat boxers do when they create beats (made a puking noise) and this teacher came up to me and told me to stop it. I said "OK" and when she started walking away, I did it again and I got indoor recess.
Me: Were you a special one in elementary school?
Johnny: I just didn't see how it was a problem. I just did it again.
Me: Any vivid food memories you had as a child?
Johnny: One time I was at my cousin's house and he had a dog that hated mustard and when we were eating dinner, the dog came up to the table and he squirted mustard at him.
Me: Can I get one more food memory?
Johnny: Pass
Me: Any good local eats found here in Reno?
Kyle: Sushi Rose, Silver Chopsticks, Flowing Tide Pub n Grill, Taco Bell
Me: How did food from Reno shape its culture?
Kyle: Like old west, I don't know. I agree with Johnny. Reno doesn't have its own culture.
Me: So Questlove did an interview of this guy from New Orleans
Kyle: For the record, Questlove is pretty thicc
Me: How were your school lunches?
Kyle: I got three words for you. Rectangular boat-shaped pizzas. Those were sick, the bean burritos were sick, too. I also forgot my lunch money sometimes and they gave me a single slice of American cheese between a slice of bread.
Me: Any particular childhood memories related to food?
Kyle: I've never seen my aunt and I went to my aunt's house in Fresno and I told her I wanted mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving and she kept saying yes. So after my six hour drive to Fresno, she ended up not making mashed potatoes because my cousins didn't like them and we were pissed.
Me: Any other memories?
Kyle: I was at a restaurant with my dad called "El Adobe's Mexican Grill" and I was maybe 10 and ordered a cheeseburger and it was massive and I ate half of it and told my dad I was full. So my dad told me to take one more bite so I did and puked all over the seat and the one guy working there had to clean it up. Ever since then, my dad never told me to take one more bite after I said I was full.
Me: Nice.
