Blog 4

Hey Everyone,

So for my blog I wrote down a series of questions for my roommate Lauren who is Japanese as a way of trying to compare our two different food backgrounds considering I was from Hawaii I thought we would have some interesting stories so I just tried to analyze and see what things we did differently for like thanksgiving or holidays. Although she was not born in Japan and has actually never been there her family did so I assumed that traditions would carry over. We've both been friends since high school but never really found the time to seek out or ask about each others cultures and what not. Therefore this assignment gave me the perfect opportunity to find out more about her background.

Question 1: Does your family have Thanksgiving meal in the morning or in the afternoon?
Answer: We usually eat during the afternoon time not necessarily dinner time either

Question 2: What kind of food does your family cook?
Answer: Usually we have the basic Thanksgiving foods such as turkey, ham, stuffing, and mash potatoes. Then my other family members like to bring different dishes that are Japanese identified.

Question 3: What kind of desserts do you guys eat?
Answer: We have pumpkin, and custard pie, then we have some homemade cakes that are usually strawberry or chocolate.

Question 4: Does your family go anywhere else to eat?
Answer: No most times if Thanksgiving isn't held at our house we will go to another family members house and just stay there for the rest of the day.

As a result of this interview I noticed that they do things pretty much the same as your typical Thanksgiving that you could think of. Which I thought would happen considering that for the most part they didn't spend a lot of time in Japan during Thanksgiving so her family evolved to the "American" ways.

  1. I like the idea of getting their perspective on Thanksgiving and it really exemplified their background.
