To whom it may concern,

Health is a very touchy subject because either you love it, or it makes you cringe. Most Americans are buying most of their meals in fast food restaurants, where you can get high-calorie foods for cheap. But all this junk food will take a toll on your body because you cannot expect to look healthy when you’re eating hamburgers and tacos every day. When someone starts talking about healthy eating, it usually goes through one ear and out the other. So, this will be short, sweet, and right to the point. Eating healthy is a process where you slowly implement changes to your life. It’ll take time and patience but with discipline, your body will feel different because you’ll be putting in a healthier fuel that your body’s been craving. We need to stop telling people to do a bucket list of things a day because most people cannot flip their lives overnight and change their lifestyle. They need to start small so they have the thought of, “this isn’t so bad”, or “this is pretty easy”. It’s with this positive reinforcement that they can start taking bigger strides, like meal prepping, or incorporating cardio daily. Obesity in American society has been rising exponentially, which is a scary rate. Something must be done, but this doesn’t mean we force people into a strict training regiment where they feel forced to live a certain way. This only creates a bigger dread towards healthy eating.

Some starting points towards having a healthier eating style can be saving the money on going out to eat on groceries and cutting down the amount of times you go out to eat. Say someone goes out to eat five times a week. We can cut that down to three on the first month, then down to one. With that reduction, we have more money towards groceries. Grocery shopping allows people to see what’s going into their foods and help save tons of money, not to mention it’s exponentially healthier for your body. Next is to pick an item and completely cut it off your diet. It sounds scary at first, but it doesn’t have to be big. Let’s pick something like candy corns for example. It’s a seasonal candy that’s not too healthy but it’s not a big food item. Once they’ve successfully cut it off, they gain a sense of confidence, which allows them to take a bigger step and maybe cut off candy completely. But keep in mind they have to start small because taking a giant step will lead to a bigger chance of them not liking it and going back to their old ways. But at the same time, these people are going to want to see results quickly so it’s important to constantly remind them about how it’s a process but at the same time, provide positive reinforcement by complimenting their achievements and having them take progress pictures, or keeping track of their weight. These types of physical proof will also help their mentality by showing them that it’s actually working and they’ll feel better about themselves.

  1. Andrew, while I agree with your thought that obesity epidemic is becoming a problem in America, some people are forced to follow an unhealthy lifestyle. Some people might not have enough time or money to cook and prepare a meal. I think having a nutritionally balanced diet of both fast food with fruits and vegetables while keeping the calories to match the daily limit would help the obesity epidemic.

  2. I agree with slowly cutting out unhealthy snacks in our diets. Baby steps are important and once we get in a good routine of dieting, then we can improve the way we eat.
