How to Eat Well on a Budget
As a college student it can be hard to eat healthy with little income. Many of us have to settle for unhealthy foods that are cheap, but that doesn't have to be the answer.
1. Shop for on sale items
Shopping for on sale items is a great way to stretch your budget. This helps you get more bang for your buck. Looking for items on sale can save you hundreds in the long run. I used to go into stores to scope out the deals then write them down and come home and plan it out. it seems like a lot of work to do, but when it involves money and health its worth a lot more than that.
2. Look for coupons
Looking for coupons is another great way to get good good bang for your buck. You can get multiple items for the price of one sometimes. I like to get the coupon magazines from the supermarkets and look all through them to find as many as possible. To find more I would look online and print out that ones that I would actually use. I usually save them up until they are just about expired then use all I can at once to save the most.
3. Stash easy to make microwaveable food
Some microwaved food can be healthy for your body and your wallet as well. When able to I like to stash up on microwaveable veggies and meats. Sometimes fresh veggies will cost more than the frozen ones so why not get the frozen ones. They take up less room and they go in the freezer where you already don't have as much stuff. During a busy weekday or even a lazy weekend I'll just put them in the microwave and have an easy, low effort meal.
4. Dont spend more on the same type of food
Spending extra just for a "better brand" if its the same food is dumb and wastes your money. Although name brands may have a better rep, you're still eating the same food. As far as canned foods go I don't really see a difference in brands at all. I find it unnecessary to spend more just on the brand, but that's me
5. Freezing food helps you keep it for longer without wasting it
Freezing breads or meats is smart because you can buy them when they are at their cheapest and then freeze them for when you need them. I like to freeze ground beef or loafs of bread when I can find them for pretty cheap. By freezing them you can keep them a couple of months and save them for a rainy day or when you want them. It also makes you go to the store less because you'll have backups in your freezer that you can thaw out while you're at school or work and have them to come home to easy to eat and prepare.
