Hello my name is Rey Cantu, I am from Las Vegas. My family comes from a Hispanic background as both sides of my family come from Mexico. I am used to my mom and other family members cooking real home made Mexican dishes. This is what I mostly grew up eating as my mom loved home cooking. Today I am interviewing my friend Rachel Warren, who has a Irish and Polish background with family members coming from both Ireland and Poland.
Question: Hello what's your name and where are you from?
Answer: Hi my name is Rachel Warren and I am from Las Vegas, Nevada
Question: Where is your family from?
Answer: My family is from Ireland and Poland. My grandma on my moms side is Irish and my grandpa from my moms side as well is Polish. My great-grandma on my grandfathers side migrated here from Poland and my great-grandma from my grandmothers side migrated here from Ireland.
Question: What kind of dishes are there in each culture?
Answer: A couple dishes that are common in Ireland is Irish Shepard's Pie which is lamb or ground beef with mashed potatoes on top. The next Irish dish is called Dublin Lawyer with Rice which is scallions and lobster meat on hot rice with whisky added in it. Some Polish dishes that are common over there is Rosół. This a chicken soup that is made with homemade noodles. Another common dish is called Golonka which is pork knuckle with horseradish sauce.
Question: So what is a popular dish that you enjoy to eat?
Answer: In Ireland a popular dish that my family and I enjoy every st. Patrick's day is called Corned beef. It's a very tender meat that is cooked all day long in spices, vegetables and broth with also a side cabbage another Irish tradition. On the Polish side of my family there is a dish called pierogis. This is a small dough dumpling that can be filled with meats, potatoes,cheese, or even blueberry filling.
Question: How does where you come from influence what you like to eat?
Answer: I believe that where I come from influences what I eat because I love all different types of food from both Poland and Ireland since I grew up eating food from these different countries.
The Dublin Lawyer sounds amazing, I've never had lobster with scallions before. I also find it interesting how they add whiskey in their rice, I'll have to try it one day.
ReplyDeleteI have family down in Vegas who actually happen to own like 5 restaurants and cafes down there! My grandparents are actually also from Poland and Ireland as well. The chicken soup dish sounds amazing! Chicken noodle soup is one of my favorites. We also eat corned beef on St. Patrick's day, you just have to.
